Top tips to save on school kit this summer

Date Created: Mon 07/Jul/2025

With the summer holidays just around the corner, we know many of our members are already planning for the new school year – especially if you’re looking to save some money. The cost of school uniforms, shoes, stationery and sports kit can really add up, but a bit of prep now can take the pressure off – and help you save money.

And remember, here at The Money Co-op, we’ve been helping families spread the cost of the back-to-school shop for over 25 years. Whether it’s a little top-up or a bigger shop, our standard loans start from just £50 – and for those receiving Child Benefit, our Family Loan offers up to £1,000.

Here are some of our favourite tips to keep the back to school shop costs down this summer:

1. Swap, don’t shop

Uniform swap shops are popping up all over the UK – from school-run events to parent Facebook groups. These are a brilliant way to pick up good-quality second-hand uniform for free or for pennies. Some schools list swap info on their website or newsletters, or try the National School Uniform Swap Shop Directory to find one near you.

2. Take stock first

Before you buy anything, do a proper round up of what your child already has – from uniform to sports kit as well as notebooks, pens and other items . Dig through drawers, check PE bags, and make a list of what’s still usable. You might be surprised what you’ve got hiding in cupboards, under beds or in old school bags. By doing a scavenger hunt around the house before hitting the shops, you might already have half the list sorted!

3. Make the most of supermarket deals

Most supermarkets launch their school uniform ranges and “special buys” around mid-July. Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury’s, Asda and others often offer multipacks and basics (like polo shirts, trousers and skirts) from as little as £1.75 each.

5. Size up – wisely

A old trick, but still a good one! Where possible, go a size up in items like jumpers, blazers and coats to get more wear. For things like shoes, tread carefully (pun intended!) – a big size might not be comfortable or last longer if they get too scuffed too soon.

6. Check out second-hand platforms

Facebook Marketplace, Vinted, eBay, and local selling pages often have school uniform bundles or items for sale. It’s also worth searching for discounted tech if your child needs a tablet, calculator or laptop. You could also sell on last year’s outgrown items yourself to help fund the new lot.

7. Know what help you’re entitled to

If you’re on a low income or claim means-tested benefits, you could be eligible for free school meals, plus extra funding for your child’s school through the Pupil Premium scheme. This can help with tuition, activities, and in some cases, uniform costs.

Some local councils also offer grants or vouchers for school uniforms – though availability varies. The best place to start is: gov.uk/school-uniform

8. Check for unclaimed benefits

We know that up to 70% of credit union loan applicants could be missing out on benefits they’re entitled to – often as much as £465 per month. Use our free Benefits Calculator to see if you’re eligible. It’s quick, easy, (and completely anonymous) – and could make a real difference to your monthly budget.
