So, when one of our long-standing members, Dave Hartley shared his story with us (link to share your story on build our community page) – we just had to share it with you too!
Read on to discover how we helped Dave create treasured family memories and give his daughters a wonderful surprise.
Here is Dave’s story, in his own words:
“It was whilst working at the then Co-operative Insurance Society, when a friend first introduced me to The Co-op Credit Union. The rates were excellent and the idea of saving whilst repaying a loan really appealed to me. So, I joined, and at first put a little into my savings each payday.
Before too long, I took out my first loan with the credit union, meaning for the first time I was able to pay for a slightly longer holiday – ten nights rather than seven in our beloved Wales. My daughters knew nothing of this and on our “last” full day I played along with their disappointment, “It’s so sad when we come to the end of our holiday, isn’t it, girls? If only we were here for a little longer… Well, we are!” The delight in their faces lives long in the memory. From that point I never looked back and ten nights soon became two weeks for all future holidays, but without the help of the credit union we would have continued to get away for only a week or maybe less.
My daughters have all since left their childhoods behind, and I no longer work at the Co-operative Insurance Society, having become a self-employed artist. Nevertheless, I remain a member and continue to save on a regular basis.
Without the credit union’s assistance, life would’ve been quite different when my daughters were children and, going forward, well, you never know when a loan may be required and I would never look any further than The Money Co-op”
