Money positivity and mental wellbeing

Date Created: Wed 26/Feb/2025

A healthy bank balance means more security and freedom to enjoy life.

When money is tight, it often increases feelings of stress, anxiety and depression.

Almost half of UK adults experience mental health challenges because of their financial situation.

We understand how difficult managing finances can be—and the knock-on effect on other areas of life. The Money Co-op serves to improve your relationship with money and in turn, your mental wellbeing.

Let’s talk about how.

The vicious cycle of money and mental health

It’s easy to get stuck in a vicious cycle.

Poor mental health can make money management harder, then those money troubles can make your mental health even worse.

When you’re not feeling your best mentally, it can be hard to face the reality of your financial situation. Sometimes, it might seem easier to ignore the problem. You might avoid paying bills on time or impulse buy for a dopamine boost.

When finances are tight, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and consider options like high-cost lenders for immediate relief. However, this can lead to even more challenging situations, such as struggling to cover basic needs like rent and meals.

It’s not your fault. Thriving in a cost-of-living crisis is tough for most people. Stress can do funny things to us, but you’re not alone.

The wider impact of financial stress

Money worries and making ill-informed decisions can impact how we feel—putting a strain on our day-to-day lives.

You might begin to experience feelings like:

  • Guilt for spending money, even on things you need
  • Ashamed of your situation, despite trying your best
  • Afraid to check your bank balance or reach out for support
  • Unconfident in your abilities to manage money
  • Isolated from avoiding social situations where money is required

These emotions can open the floodgates to conditions like anxiety, depression and more.

We don’t want you losing sleep, taking time off from work, or struggling to maintain relationships.

It gets better when you’re a member of The Money Co-op.

Support you can count on

When you’re a member of The Money Co-op, you don’t face these things alone.

You’re supported by a community of people on a journey to improve their financial and mental wellbeing.

We facilitate this by:

  • Making saving easier, often for the first time from just £10 a month. You probably won’t even notice it leaving your bank—even a small amount of savings act as a safety net for emergencies, reducing the need for future borrowing. We reward healthy habits with annual dividend payments to our members (like interest)—not to mention, saving with us helps other members
  • Offering fair, low-interest loans that protect you from high-interest debt and feeling anxious about unachievable repayments. We’re proud to have saved our members an estimated £350,000 per year in interest costs—equating to a total of £1.65 million over the past four years compared to borrowing elsewhere.
  • Providing practical money tools, from savings calculators to budgeting tools. Discover exactly what to do with your money to help you achieve financial goals.
  • Empowering you with financial education such as money tips and useful resources that help you plan for the future.

We help you feel positive about your finances, no matter your situation. Got a family holiday coming up? Some home improvements to improve your quality of life? Perhaps consolidating some debts with us could help you get on top of your finances. We’re here with you through it all.

You’ll become more money-positive in everyday life knowing you have us rooting for you.

Here’s what our members have to say:

“A small amount set aside every month gives me peace of mind that I have a rainy day find for emergencies” – Jeremy

“I’m able to think more proactively about saving and making a conscious decision to save rather than it being more ad hoc” – Catherine

“I have been saving with the The Money Co-op for a number of years and it has given a sense of security” – Pauline
